Web development and maintenance for UCLA Design|Media Arts. Specific aspects include the main website, its respective content management system, the student forum, and the support website. The greatest challenge is adding to and editing the existing code and content while retaining the overall D|MA identity. Work is done with a small team of other students, lab technicians, and a faculty supervisor.   See more »

The main site is the public web presence of D|MA, designed for prospective students, commercial interests, and professionals in the field. My work on it includes modifying and implementing a Flash slideshow app for the Undergrad Gallery; enhanced crosslinking between individual works, classes, faculty, and students; increased CSS stability; and regular content management. The student forum is a customization of Lussumo's open-source forum software Vanilla. My work on it includes hands-on customization of the theme and style as well as modification of the authenticator to work with D|MA's LDAP system. The edit site is the in-house content management system for the main site. My work on it includes a building newsletter generator app as well as modularizing and refining the form components for easier future modifications. The support site is the in-house backend hub for user, consultant, and administrator interaction with all lab equipment, i.e. viewing, adding, and editing equipment reservations, print jobs, and account privileges. My work on it includes the foundation CSS styling with some JavaScript, various core functionality, and some database design.   See less »

Vondriska Lab is the lab website for Thomas Vondriska of UCLA Anesthesiology and Medicine. The lab specializes in systems biology and proteomics, subjects which emphasize interactive biological networks. The graphics correspond to the subject by being first generated in Processing as cross-linked particles. Due to my continued involvement in managing the site's content, the second and current build of the site features migration to PHP and completely valid CSS and XHTML.

Complete branding and promotional package design for Butterfly Lovers, UCLA Chinese Student Association's 2007 Heritage Night performance. The package includes a 12-page programme, as well as poster and flyer. The programme design further reflects the script's fusion of Chinese folklore and modern urban elements. The package is regarded as the most comprehensive and professional in the history of the student group and its events.

Poster and book design for the Communication Design course. The main challenge was to formulate a visual concept to present the ideas and optimism espoused by Alun Anderson in his response about solar energy to the Edge Foundation's 2007 World Question. The circular form of the Sun is used as the symbol of the campaign. To communicate the importance of the Sun, the posters became literal representations of its visual beauty and gained its sensory associations with warmth and illumination. The book goes into greater depths on the concept of solar energy and sustainability as well the extensive research and conceptualization process.

Animated typographic monologue for the final project of the Dynamic Typography course. The speaker is Ewan McGregor during the opening of Trainspotting. The motion and type design are designed to amplify his mocking and cynical tone about the 'ideal life,' as marked by the pastel grid glittering ironically in the background. In the foreground, the bipolar typography is animated literally but also to be equally mocking in their military march of rigid compositions and swift transitions.

Loose, non-linear narrative for the final project of the Video Design course. Starting at the end, the film builds a complex, eerie obsession about an obsessive musician, weaving parallels out of the seemingly random and illogical. The film, with no dialogue, is an experiment in using ambiguous cross-cutting and ambience as narrative device. The cinematography and subject matter are attributed to the director Hideaki Anno.

Interactive infographic written in ActionScript 3 that originates from coursework for dynamic web design. Data from NationMaster is cleaned and imported manually into an XML datasheet loaded into the application. The intent is for the user to 'discover' the data through interaction and attention to the visuals. Due to the sober nature of the data, the piece purposefully lacks the general flare associated with Flash.   See more »

It is only recently I started to write software in AS3 and this piece only begins to show what is possible. The code is a basic example of Object-Oriented Programming and is written with the Singleton design pattern.   See less »

The general concept is the software interpretation of Merzbow's 'Untitled' as a dynamic wall of sound. The main audio component is reflected by a dynamic, liquid environment of pulsating static. The synchronization between the collective and singular particle motions complement the complexity of the audio's micro-samples. A series of montaged and abstracted imagery is mixed in to compliment the strong emotions in the audio.

Illustration for the Hotel Del Coronado's annual winter holidays event, of which the featured attraction is an ice skating rink by the beach. The scene was drawn as being filled with vacationers and their children, but due to client demands, the skaters are removed with digitally. The image is also digitally enhanced from its original colored pencil version for a smoother, more painterly quality. The illustration was used on the hotel's website and newspaper announcements for the event.

Coursework for Introductory Painting. Series of paintings loosely studying and exploring new ways the mechanical and organic can fit together. The pieces are created during a period when as a graphic designer, I questioned my usual painting decisions as a fine artist in subject, form, color, symbol, technique, and material. Some pieces use photographic reference, but always deviate from the original. The process is relies heavily on spontaneous, (counter) intuitive decisions, especially those on color.
